The federal government regulates most every product you can name, from infant car seats and prescription drugs to spinach, meat, pet food and breakfast cereal. But buy cigarettes — so deadly they kill 400,000 Americans each year — get a pass. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no authority to regulate them. And Big Tobacco has used its lobbying savvy and campaign contributions to turn back every effort to change that. Now Congress has another chance, one it shouldn’t squander, particularly as the industry is gearing up to deploy a new generation of tobacco products to appeal to a new generation of consumers. Last month, Philip Morris launched Marlboro Snus (rhymes with noose) in Dallas, and R.J. Reynolds added Dallas to a list of seven cities where its Camel Snus was already available. Both are a Swedish type of smokeless tobacco that doesn’t require users to spit out the residue. The industry sees snus as a way to boost sales in the face of laws against smoking in offices, restaurants and bars.

Vasil is the author of Ecoholic: when you are addicted to the planet and a regular columnist for Now magazine, the culture and issues oriented, free entertainment weekly in Toronto. We all worry about global warming. We all want to help the environment. But how do we start? By reading Ecoholic. In her introduction, Vasil states, “The tough part is that figuring out what’s green and what’s ‘greenwash,’ what’s eco-friendly and what’s ozone-deadly can be downright dizzying.” The great news is Vasil has done the work for us. Vasil’s wonderful, clear, exhaustively researched and, most importantly, extremely helpful book is just what every confused and concerned consumer needs. Our conversation about plastic bottles continues and Vasil explains that it is not just the oil that makes bottled water so insidiously dangerous. Maybe we justify using bottled water because the bottles are recyclable. But to produce the 1.5 million tonnes of “virgin plastic” the bottles start from, “all sorts of nasty benzene and ethylene oxide, are emitted during the manufacturing process.” Ecoholic is upbeat, as is Vasil. There is no guilt trip here, no doom or gloom. “The last thing I want people to do is get overwhelmed,” Vasil says. “I want people to be motivated to take action and being overwhelmed doesn’t help that.” Just the facts, ma’am as Joe Friday used to say on Dragnet. And, that is what Vasil provides — each fact more fascinating than the one before. Startling, motivating, necessary facts, which make clear the impact of each consumer action we take. Vasil also provides alternatives by naming products, companies and sources for environmentally friendly and non-toxic goods. She includes websites and contact information. Since Vasil is a Canadian writer and since she has clearly done her research, the information covers communities and products across Canada. Now here is a fact that instantly motivated me to take action. Though I don’t own a dog, I love to walk dogs in my neighbourhood. “If you’re walking your dog three times daily, and he’s got an active digestive system and lives to be, say 16, that’s 17,520 bags worth! Now doesn’t it seem silly to put perfectly biodegradable dog poop into a bag that takes over 100 years to break down?” Vasil names a company that produces biodegradable and compostable bags that take only 40 days to break down. (Cats owners take note; you too can use these bags when you empty the litter box.) The table of contents reveals how comprehensive the book is, with more than 300 pages of data, suggestions and product information. The book begins by looking at health and cosmetic products. Vasil makes clear the confusing labels and demystifies what she calls “greenwashing,” the use of misleading terms, such as organic to make a product look harmless. Chapters cover topics ranging from What Not to Wear, Food for Thought, Kid Stuff, Where the Heart Is (about the home), Big Issues and more. Just when I thought that the impact on one’s health was reason enough to stop people from smoking, I ran into this information in Ecoholic. If you smoke a pack a day, 26 trees are destroyed every year, to bring you that pack of cigarettes. “One tree is axed and bleached for every 300 cigarettes rolled in paper. That’s one tree every two weeks if you smoke a pack a day.” 555 Belomorkanal Bond Camel Chesterfield Dallas Davidoff Dunhill Epique Esse Gauloises Karelia Kent L&M Lucky Strike Magna Marlboro Marlboro Mild Seven Monte Carlo More Pall Mall Parliament Peter I R1 Rothmans Russian Style Salem Sobranie Sovereign Viceroy Virginia Slims Vogue West Winston

The three of us squeezed into the tiny elevator. The smell of urine was overpowering. Trash lined every inch of the floor. “Welcome to the projects,” Officer G. said. “Ha ha ha.” I had forgotten all about him. Officer H. remarked that I looked tired. I tried to tame my hair a bit. “Don’t worry, you look good,” he said. The elevator door opened and a fat, sad looking woman appeared. She entered with a cheap cigarettes. Officer H. recognized the woman from an earlier mission. He radioed the EMS to wait downstairs. “Maybe you wanna put out the buy cheap cigarettes?” he gently asked the woman as she stepped into the crammed elevator. The fat woman just looked at him and took another drag.

That’s why the 34-year-old Austin man is looking forward to Jan. 1, when cigarettes go up at least $1 per pack and about $12 per carton after Texas officially increases the tax on cigarettes to help pay for a property-tax cut. Maybe, finally, it’ll make him quit. “I invite the tax. I’m all for anything that makes it harder for me, both individually and in society, to smoke,” he said. “I love things like that. I love smoking bans, I love feeling marginalized and having to pay more for what really is a habit that’s bad for my health.” Anticipation is already rising among smokers and nonsmokers and their respective big-money advocates, more than a week before the tax hits convenience stores and Cigarettes Online shops across Texas. Convenience stores are bracing for a drop in sales. Discount shops are running out of some brands. Distributors are liquidating their inventories. And federal agents are keeping an eye on the situation after tax increases in other states led to robberies and smuggling rings. And many smokers are vowing to either kick the habit or look outside state lines for their cigarettes - given that a pack-a-day habit will cost an additional $30 a month after New Year’s Day. Don Novak of Dallas, annoyed at both the cost and the premise of the new tax, plans to make regular cigarette runs to Oklahoma to stock up. “It might cost me $10 in gas, but I’ll just have the satisfaction that I’m buying for a cheaper price up there,” said Mr. Novak, 55. In El Paso, smoker Bonnie Carreno could easily trek across the Mexican border into Juarez for some cheap smokes - if she can get them back into Texas without declaring them and paying the tax at the border, the scenario tax opponents are afraid will happen. Along with the regular border customs enforcement, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms plans to coordinate with other agencies at all levels to be extra vigilant about cigarette smuggling, officials there said. Still, it won’t be difficult to bring in a few packs at a time under the radar for personal use. But after 20 years of smoking, Ms. Carreno, a 36-year-old nuclear medicine tech, isn’t even going to bother. “It’s a good excuse to go ahead and quit,” she said. “I’ve been wanting to for a while, anyway. Everybody knows it’s not good for you to begin with.”

Workplace Chemicals Can Enter the Body When Contaminated Tax Free Cigarettes are Smoked. Cigarettes may actually help to carry toxic substances into the body. As a person holds and smokes a cigarette, toxic substances may enter the body through breathing, taking them in through the mouth or skin absorption. Examples of workplace chemicals that can enter the body of workers smoking contaminated cheap Cigarettes include dusts, lead, mercury and formaldehyde. Additionally, pesticides used in treating tobacco during processing can enter the body by breathing them in and become 100% absorbed. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that cigarettes not be kept on a person in the work area and that if a person must smoke their hands should be washed before smoking.
